Monthly Meetings

The Manchester Model Railway Society arranges a continuing series of monthly meetings on topics of interest to railway modellers and others interested in various aspects of transport. Most of these meetings are on a Friday evening and are open to the public, Saturday meetings, with the exception of our annual exhibition, are MMRS member only events.

The current programme is…

  • Friday 11th October 2019 – 19:30 – Dean Hall – Quiz Night
      • In a departure from our usual type of meeting, MMRS will host a light hearted quiz on railway related matters. Covering the last 216 years of railway history and railways from all over the globe, the questions will be varied. It’s probably best to enter as a team of up to five people – especially when you realise that there will be rounds on films, music and literature – but all with a railway link!
  • Friday 8th November 2019 – 19:30 – Dean Hall – Ian Pilkington – Steam and Diesel in the Northern Fells 2010-2016
      • The show is a selection of images taken 2010-16, approximately two thirds steam, one third diesel, showing trains in the landscape on some of England’s most scenic lines, including the Settle-Carlisle, the WCML over Grayrigg and Shap, Carnforth to Hellifield, Clitheroe and Skipton, the Cumbrian Coast and the Newcastle-Carlisle.

  • Friday 17th April 2020 – 19:30 – Dean Hall – Phil Sweet – Layout Lighting – A Theatrical Approach
      • The vast majority of layouts seen on the exhibition circuit pay little heed to realistic lighting and this omission frequently results in layouts which lack character. This talk will investigate our perception of colour and shadow, look at the techniques used in theatre lighting to create mood and sense of location, and show how these techniques can be modified to create a more interesting and life-like atmosphere on a model railway.
  • Saturday 9th May 2020 – 12:00 – Dean Hall – Layout Operating Afternoon
      • This is an opportunity for members to have an extended running session on the Society layouts, giving them a chance to train new operators and rehearse train movements in preparation for exhibition appearances.
